RT-PCR tests look for active SARS-CoV-2 by detecting the virus on the molecular level through its RNA. By finding the coronavirus through its RNA, these tests can positively identify COVID-19 in its earliest stages soon after exposure. However, there must still be enough of the virus and genetic material available for the RT-PCR test to be accurate, so it is best to schedule your appointment for a few days after your potential exposure.

Molecular PCR tests are the most accurate diagnostic COVID test because they identify active SARS-CoV-2 on the genetic level. As the Gold Standard, these tests are 99% accurate, even in early stages of the coronavirus without any present COVID-19 symptoms.

Nasal swab tests are diagnostic tests designed to detect current COVID-19 infections. When a person is exposed to SARS-CoV-2, the virus develops in the upper respiratory system. Analyzing nasal swab samples with a RT-PCR test lets us locate the present virus. Antibody tests are not diagnostic and can not be used to identify active COVID-19 cases. Instead, these blood tests detect previous cases as they look for COVID antibodies that the immune system only learns to make after infection or vaccination. Blood tests allow us to see the body’s immune response rather than the actual coronavirus.

In rare cases, PCR tests can produce false negative results if there isn’t enough of the virus present, which can happen in the first 2-3 days after exposure. However, it is possible that the patient did not have COVID when the test was performed, but they may later start experiencing symptoms if they become infected afterwards. Diagnostic COVID-19 tests only identify current infections; they do not prevent future ones from developing.

Along with the PCR COVID test, our facility also performs Rapid Antigen and Antibody testing. Rapid Antigen tests also identify current infection through a simple and comfortable nasal swab. Antibody tests instead detect SARS-CoV-2 antibodies that develop from vaccination or previous infection. Same-day COVID testing results are available for all three tests.

Rapid diagnostic tests identify and diagnose COVID-19 quickly by using an upper respiratory sample to detect the virus. These tests include both RT-PCR and Antigen testing. Patients can receive their test results in less than an hour, within the same day, or by the next day. Depending on the specific test, nasal swab samples are either processed on site at our testing facility or sent to a laboratory. Rapid same-day PCR testing must be scheduled before 10:30 for High-Complex Lab to receive and process the specimens and return the results by 9pm via email. Negative COVID test results mean that you likely do not have SAR-CoV-2, including the COVID Delta variant. However, you are still recommended to be cautious and maintain proper safety protocols, including social distancing, for 10 days after exposure if you were in contact with someone COVID-positive. If you start or continue experiencing COVID symptoms, your healthcare provider may suggest another COVID test, even if you are fully vaccinated. While PCR tests can detect early-stage COVID, it is possible that there was not enough SARS-CoV-2 present when the test was taken or you contracted the virus after the test.

You may need a PCR COVID test if you have been within 6ft of someone with COVID for at least 15 minutes or start experiencing warning signs and symptoms like shortness of breath, fever and chills, congestion, daytime tiredness, body aches and pains, or new loss of smell or taste. Even if you have been fully vaccinated or previously had COVID-19, you should still schedule a rapid test if you have any COVID symptoms. While you have an extra line of defense against the virus, it is still possible (if rare) to contract COVID, particularly the Delta variant. Additionally, crowded and busy places like workplaces, schools, theme parks, and airports may require testing.
